Bessèges - Bad luck for WGG in opening stage

Bessèges - Bad luck for WGG in opening stage

Three riders formed an early breakaway in the opening stage of Étoile de Bessèges (2.1, 31/01-04/02) between Bellegarde and Beaucaire. The teams of the sprinters kept the advantage under control and the final attacker was caught with five kilometers to go. A bunch sprint was inevitable. Unfortunately with bad luck for our team. Guillaume Van Keirsbulck crashed with 5km to go and also Timothy Dupont and Pieter Vanspeybrouck came down in the final sprint. French rider Marc Sarreau (FDJ) was the fastest. Wesley Kreder (23rd) was the first finisher of our team. Tomorrow the riders ride from Nimes to Générac in a hilly stage.

Medical report by team doctor Joost De Maeseneer

* Pieter Vanspeybrouck:  Wound on left knee, no adhesion needed. Furthermore, multiple abrasions on left body half. Wound care took place after the stage. Start on Thursday should be possible.

* Timothy Dupont and Guillaume Van Keirsbulck: The injuries are not too bad. Timothy has a small wound on the forearm. Nothing too bad.
